UNITED STATES HISTORY
(1 year - 10 credits - grade 11)
PURPOSE:
To provide the students with an understanding of the changes affecting American Society.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
1. Explain the activities of early European explorers who set out in search of the Orient.
2. Describe how the Protestant Reformation prompted many Europeans to seek new homes in the New World.
3. Recount the circumstances of the founding of the New England colonies.
4. Describe colonial life during the 1700’s.
5. Explain the reasons for and the results of the Great Awakening.
6. Summarize the activities of the French and Indian wars and their results.
7. Describe the colonists’ actions to protest the efforts of British government to tighten colonial rule. (Parliamentary actions of the 1760’s that angered colonists.)
8. Describe the circumstances that surrounded the Boston Massacre.
9. Summarize the causes of the Revolutionary War, major battles, the heroes, and the Treaty of Paris of 1783.
10. List the four weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation.
11. Explain The Ordinances of 1785 and 1787.
12. Summarize the three major compromises that were involved in writing the Constitution.
13. Discuss the three branches of the Federal Government and the duties of each.
14. Summarize Alexander Hamilton’s plan to relieve the debt of the U.S. alter the Revolutionary War.
15. Explain the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850.
16. Discuss the events leading to the Civil War.
17. Discuss the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad.
18. Contrast the First Transcontinental Railroad and The Great Northern Railroad. (Map the routes of each)
19. Summarize the technological and scientific advances in Agriculture in the late 19th century.
20. Discuss the importance of Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell.
21. Discuss the importance of Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, and Vanderbilt.
22. Explain proper respect for the American Flag.
23. Summarize the causes, events, participants, and results of the Spanish-American War.
24. Compare and contrast the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.
25. Explain the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.
26. Discuss the Changes on the National, State and Local levels during the Progressive Era.
27. Summarize the causes, events, participants, and results of World War I.
28. Discuss the reasons for the crash of the Stock Market.
29. Compare and contrast Hoover’s and Roosevelt’s actions and responses to the Depression.
30. Understand the consequences of the “New Deal”.
31. Identify the main issues, events and participants of World War II.
32. Demonstrate the ability to take notes.
33. Demonstrate the ability to plan ahead and budget their time.
34. Demonstrate research skills and write a report in their own words.
35. Demonstrate the ability to write critical essays.
