This year the Varsity boys basketball team had a new head coach, Kevin Wilkerson. He helped develop individual skills and emphasized team unity. The team started off their season with the Los Molinos, Maxwell, Hamilton, and Liberty tournaments. The team’s overall record was 14-12 and their league record was 5-5. The varsity boys team was ranked third for the play-offs but lost in first round against Princeton.
This year’s team was coached by Mark Priano. The team included: Carly Koslofsky, Camille Fuller, Emily Evans, Heidi Louber, Natalie Crippa, Karlee Burns, Stephanie Smith, Kristen Smith and the only returning senior was Jenessa Geer. They played a total of 27 games and their record was 14-13. Their league record was 7-3. The team started off their season with many big tournaments including, Colusa, Durham, Hamilton, and Liberty.
The J.V girls this year were coached by Mark Priano. There was only six girls on the team,a small team, but they were mighty.
Their team included: Melissa Goings, Freshman, Caroline Gill, Freshman, Seanie Davenport, Sophomore, Alysia Ballantyne, Sophomore, Elisabeth Reyes, Freshman, Laura Harter, Freshman, and for the last couple games, Emily Reynolds, Freshman. About halfway through the season, the team lost their point guard, Melissa, due to a injured wrist. Emily Reynolds gladly joined the team to help out. The teams overall record was 4-15.
The J.V boys team was under new coaching this year by Todd Morgan. The boys on the team included: Jordan Brownfield, Jeremiah Gawthrop, Jonathan Fulvio, Logan Hawes, Jeff Boese, Andrew Matkovich, and Kristofer Freemyers-Card.
All the boys worked so hard, Jordan being the main point guard, Jeremiah and Andrew being the main posts, and Jonathan and Logan Hawes being the main wings. Jeff and Kristofer were also frequently subbed in and worked hard also. Their final record was 6- 11.
This year’s Champion Christian Auction was a big hit. The school made over $9,000 because of the hard work everyone put into it. This Auction wouldn’t have been able to be put on if it wasn’t for the hard work of: Karen Boettcher, Wendy Woolsey, Roy and Debbie Geer, Melanie Smith, Debbie Pease, Barry Stein, and John Ballantyne. Many of Champions own students also helped out by serving and being bid runners. Together, Champion parents and students worked hard to get done what needed to get done. Karen Boettcher, the coordinator of this year’s Auction, says, “I’m really happy that the whole thing went well and all the volunteers were awesome. I would be nothing without my team leaders. They were really well organized and made the whole evening come together. I think it was a pretty fun evening and I’m very thankful.”
The Champion softball girl’s team is off to a great start. Out of the team’s first seven games, they have only lost one game, to East Nicolaus. Their greatest win, so far, was against Faith Christian, the final score being 32-0.
